Drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo and pianist Irène Schweizer have been friends since the early 1960’s. At that time the South African drummer was a member of the Blue Notes, the band of exiles led by the pianist Chris McGregor who had guest residencies at the Jazz café Africana in Zurich. It was there that the young pianist got to know South African music, and their brand of jazz influenced by township and kwela. This influence was formative for Schweizer and has stayed with her ever since.
One of the most extraordinary musical documents emerged from the 1986 Zurich Jazz Festival, which was presenting South African musicians as its main programming strand. The concert by Irène Schweizer and Louis Moholo morphed into an aesthetic and a political protest against apartheid in South Africa, and also against the banks, and Zurich as a financial centre, which was colluding actively with the apartheid regime.
The album Irène Schweizer – Louis Moholo, with its opening track Free Mandela, documents this event. It was one of the very earliest releases on the Intakt label. “His rhythmic strength is what I really love about his playing,” says Irène Schweizer about her friend and musical colleague Louis Moholo-Moholo. “I see similarities with Elvin Jones in the period he played with Coltrane.” And the feeling is mutual: for Moholo, Schweizer is not just a musician of real stature, but also a sister who provided support to him and to his community in the darkest days of their struggle for freedom and against apartheid.

Louis Moholo-Moholo und Irène Schweizer sind seit den frühen Sechzigerjahren befreundet. Der südafrikanische Schlagzeuger war Mitglied der ins Exil gegangenen Gruppe «Blue Notes» des südafrikanischen Pianisten Chris McGregor, die damals im Zürcher Jazzcafé Africana gastierte. Hier lernte die junge Pianistin die südafrikanischen Musiker und ihren von südafrikanischer Kwela- und Township-Musik beeinflussten Jazz kennen, ein Einfluss, der das Spiel von Irène Schweizer bis heute prägt. In Berlin trafen sie sich für erste Aufnahmen.
Eines der musikalisch aussergewöhnlichen Dokumente entstand 1986 am Jazzfestival in Zürich, das einen Schwerpunkt mit südafrikanischen Musikern präsentierte. Das Konzert von Irène Schweizer und Louis Moholo wurde zu einer ästhetischen und politischen Demonstration gegen die Apartheidpolitik Südafrikas sowie gegen den mit dem Apartheidregime kollaborierenden Bankenplatz Zürich. «Free Mandela» heisst das Stück, das eine der ersten Platten von Intakt Records einleitet. «Es ist das Rhythmische, das mir bei Louis so gut gefällt. Dieser wahnsinnige Drive hat etwas Tranceähnliches», sagt Irène Schweizer über ihren Musikerfreund. «Ich vergleiche Louis mit Elvin Jones, als dieser mit John Coltrane spielte.» Und Louis Moholo-Moholo lobt im Filmportrait die Pianistin: Sie ist für ihn nicht nur eine grosse Musikerin, sondern eine Schwester, die ihn und seine Community im Kampf gegen die Apartheid und für die Freiheit unterstützte.

Omri Ziegele is one of the leading figures on the Zurich jazz scene, not just as saxophonist, band-leader and composer, but also as a promoter and a brilliant connector. For more than two decades he has led the Zurich-based octet Billiger Bauer (meaning ‘cheap farmer’) and played in his trio Noisy Minority with Ray Anderson.
He also has a trio with Christian Weber and Han Bennink, and works with the younger generation of Zurich musicians.
At the end of the 1990’s he used to play regularly in a duo with the pianist Irène Schweizer – she is two generations older than him – in the café Casablanca in Zurich, where they would perform pieces from her core repertoire. The result of that collaboration was a fabulous duo CD entitled Where is Africa. In the intervening years, the duo has expanded into a trio through the involvement of the Basle-based South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko, which has led the group increasingly in the direction of the music of Ntshoko’s homeland, and the rich repertoire of compositions by Johnny Dyani, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand. It is a particular pleasure therefore to bring into being this London encounter of the Ziegele-Schweizer duo with the great Louis Moholo-Moholo.

Omri Ziegele zählt zu den führenden Persönlichkeiten der Zürcher Jazzszene: Saxofonist, Bandleader, Komponist, auch Veranstalter und Integrator. Er leitet seit mehr als zwei Dekaden das Zürcher Ensemble Billiger Bauer, spielt mit seinem Trio Noisy Minority sowie mit Ray Anderson, hat ein Trio mit Christian Weber und Han Bennink und arbeitet mit jüngeren Zürcher Musikern. Ende der Neunzigerjahre traf sich Ziegele regelmässig mit der um zwei Generationen älteren Pianistin Irène Schweizer im Zürcher Café Casablanca, wo sie im Duo ihr Herzrepertoire spielten. Eine wunderbare Duo-CD unter dem Titel «Where is Africa» entstand.
Das Duo, inzwischen zum Trio mit dem in Basel wohnenden südafrikanischen Schlagzeuger Makaya Ntshoko erweitert, widmete sich immer mehr der Musik aus der Heimat Ntshokos und spielte Stücke von Johnny Dyani, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand. Die Trioplatte ist voller schwarzem Blues und explosivem Howling, immer melodisch und dem erdigen Beat zugetan: Ein Feuerwerk der Emotionen. Neben südafrikanischen Stücken und ausgesuchten Balladen aus Übersee spielt das Trio auch Stücke aus Omri Ziegeles Feder. Der Saxofonist, der so oft den ungeschminkten, rauen Ton sucht, überrascht mit Melodie, Eleganz und Zartheit. Dass in London Louis Moholo-Moholo zum Duo Ziegele–Schweizer stösst, ist eine grosse Freude!
