Der britische Pianist, Organist und Komponist Alexander Hawkins (*1981) wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf und erhielt früh Unterricht, vor allem auf der Kirchenorgel. Studiert hat er dann aber Kriminologie. In den letzten 15 Jahren hat sich der promovierte Jurist aus Oxford indes zu einer Schlüsselfigur der Londoner Jazzszene entwickelt und verschiedene Formationen geleitet. Er spielt intellektuellen, postmodernen Jazz, der sich Elemente vom Barock bis zur Neuen Musik einverleibt und bemüht ist, über den blossen Eklektizismus hinaus zu einem kohärenten Stil zu finden.

De Britse pianist/componist Alexander Hawkins is het creatieve epicentrum van de Londense jazzscene en wordt beschouwd als een van de meest vernieuwende muzikanten met een verrassende actieradius. Zijn trio met Neil Charles (contrabas, perc.) en Stephen Davis (drums. perc.) werd opgericht in 2012 en staat garant voor de verbinding van vrijheid en structuur, compositie en improvisatie. Het album begint met “Rapture” waarin Hawkins vooral gebruik maakt van de synthesizer en samples, typisch zaken die ik liefst aan mij voorbij laat gaan. Gelukkig blijft het in “Puzzle Canon“ bij de piano, Hawkins doet me hier sterk denken aan pianisten als Paul Bley en vooral Thelonius Monk door zijn sterk afwisselende spel en spannende overgangen.

Een verwijzing naar de modernisti- sche leuze van Ezra Pound, maar natuurliik ook een vraag die elke rechtgeaarde muzikant die werkt in een format war een geschie- denis, bagage en hoop connotaties aan kleven bezighoudt.

Es macht auf einmal Sinn, wenn Haw- kins erzählt, dass er seine tägliche Übungsstunden mit Johann Sebas- tian Bach bestreitet.

Oxford-based pianist Alexander Hawkins’ trio, completed by bassist Neil Charles and drummer Stephen Davis, has been integral to much of his recent activity. They appeared alongside him and vocalist Elaine Mitchener on UpRoot, and also formed the bedrock of last year’s sextet outing on Intakt, Break A Vase. Furthermore, their inside/outside facility made them the natural choice to round out Anthony Braxton’s ensemble, captured at length on Quartet (Standards) 2020. So, it’s no surprise that they work so hand in glove at times on Carnival Celestial. What’s more unexpected is the way Hawkins deliberately pitches himself against them at certain junctures, to generate an unsettling off-balance effect. Clearly, as you would expect from someone with Hawkins’ forward-looking streak, this isn’t a straightforward piano trio session.

They have also recorded together in various settings, notably on the Alexander Hawkins/Elaine Mitchener album UpRoot (Intakt, 2017), with Anthony Braxton on Quartet (Standards) 2020 (New Braxton House, 2021) and on Alexander Hawkins/Mirror Cannon's Break a Vase (Intakt, 2022), which also featured percussionist Richard Olatunde Baker , guitarist Otto Fischer and reeds player Shabaka Hutchings. But Carnival Celestial is their first trio document, and a fascinating one at that.

Dvaačtyřicetiletý britský pianista Alexander Hawkins je již velmi sledovanou personou na mezinárodní progresivně jazzové scéně. Hrál již s mnohými hvězdami starší generace (např. s Evanem Parkerem, Johnem Surmanem či Hamidem Drakem), nahrává sólově, rozličně komponuje a vede také několik pozoruhodných formací. Osobitý a inovativní přístup projevuje i v rámci tak tradičního formátu, jakým je jazzové klavírní trio.
