NEIL CHARLES am Bass und STEPHEN DAVIS an Drums sind als harter Kern auch bei „Uproot“ im Alexander Hawkins-Elaine Mitchener Quartet und bei „Break a Vase“ in Mirror Canon zu finden, erklingen nun aber bei Carnival Celestial (Intakt CD 398) als ALEXANDER HAWKINS TRIO ganz ohne Beiwerk.

Der britische Pianist, Organist und Komponist Alexander Hawkins (*1981) wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf und erhielt früh Unterricht, vor allem auf der Kirchenorgel. Studiert hat er dann aber Kriminologie. In den letzten 15 Jahren hat sich der promovierte Jurist aus Oxford indes zu einer Schlüsselfigur der Londoner Jazzszene entwickelt und verschiedene Formationen geleitet. Er spielt intellektuellen, postmodernen Jazz, der sich Elemente vom Barock bis zur Neuen Musik einverleibt und bemüht ist, über den blossen Eklektizismus hinaus zu einem kohärenten Stil zu finden.

De Britse pianist/componist Alexander Hawkins is het creatieve epicentrum van de Londense jazzscene en wordt beschouwd als een van de meest vernieuwende muzikanten met een verrassende actieradius. Zijn trio met Neil Charles (contrabas, perc.) en Stephen Davis (drums. perc.) werd opgericht in 2012 en staat garant voor de verbinding van vrijheid en structuur, compositie en improvisatie. Het album begint met “Rapture” waarin Hawkins vooral gebruik maakt van de synthesizer en samples, typisch zaken die ik liefst aan mij voorbij laat gaan. Gelukkig blijft het in “Puzzle Canon“ bij de piano, Hawkins doet me hier sterk denken aan pianisten als Paul Bley en vooral Thelonius Monk door zijn sterk afwisselende spel en spannende overgangen.

'How to make it new?' is de centrale vraag die het art- work van het album siert. Een verwijzing naar de modernisti- sche leuze van Ezra Pound, maar natuurliik ook een vraag die elke rechtgeaarde muzikant die werkt in een format war een geschie- denis, bagage en hoop connotaties aan kleven bezighoudt.

Es scheint in letter Zeit ein wenig trendy zu sein, dass Jazzpianisten auf Synthesizer zurückgreifen. Das verleiht den Klängen etwas 70er-Jahre-mäßiges, eine Patina, die wahrscheinlich beabsichtigt ist. Der große Craig Taborn befleißigt sich seit geraumer Zeit verstärkt dieser Attitüde ein wenig zu ausgiebig. Auch der Beginn der neuen Intakt-CD lässt es ordentlich blubbern und glucksen.
